The guns were built for Brigadier General Alexander Ramsay Harman, CMG, DSO. Born in 1877 he served in the Sudan campaign of 1898 and the South African war. He retired in 1913 and was re-called on reserve to command the 7th BN Worcestershire Regiment in 1916. He was awarded the DSO for gallantry and mentioned in dispatches three times. He retired in 1920 and died in 1954. His 1901 diary records that on Tuesday 17th December, "... after luncheon, went to Cogswell & Harrison about my guns.." and on Wednesday 18th December "..after breakfast went to Cogswell & Harrison's trial place, close to Victoria railway station..".
