The mechanism was patented in 1872, no. 1137. MacNaughton claimed numerous advantages for the Duval-MacNaughton rifle over the popular Martini Henry action that had been selected as the rifle of the British Army. It appears that relatively few rifles on this action were completed and was rapidly superseded by other falling block designs.
