Details of Lot 161
J. PURDEY & SONS
A FINE EARLY 12-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR GUN, NO. 11684

30-inch Whitworth steel barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about 1/4 and 1/2 choke borings, mid extension, the frame and locks with fine bouquet and scroll engraving and retaining much original hardening colour, the fences carved with foliage, cocking indicators, sprung front trigger, 14 1/4-inch highly figured exhibition grade stock, with chequered butt plate, the gold oval engraved "C.S. from J.P. June 30th 1883", 6lb. 9oz., black powder proof

The makers confirm that the gun was completed on 17 July 1884 for a Mr Carl Sedberg on the instruction of James Purdey himself. The conforms with its original specifications (with the exception of the substitution of metal heel and toe plates with a butt plate).

It is believed that Carl Sedberg was James Purdey's son-in-law. However, at the time of going to press, this has not been confirmed. This would certainly explain the very level of finish on this gun and the exceptional quality of the exhibition grade stock. The gun remains in remarkable condition for its age.
